October 6, 2009 - Summit Drive Road Bike Ride

I finally took the old KHS out for a spin, and I am still asking myself why do my legs feel like jelly. I mean I put in a whole 16kms and averaged a blistering 14kms an hour. You would think that given my usual mileage 16kms would be nothing. But wait, I am in Kamloops now. City of hills. And they mostly only go up. I began my tour going up Summit to Gleneagles, then did the Gleneagle Loop, then headed back up Summit and eventually found myself behind the Aberdeen Mall, which confused me a great deal because I never have approached the Aberdeen Mall from that direction. So instead of hitting heavier than my comfort level would allow traffic, I turned around and went back up Hugh Allen Drive which, by the way is called Summit on the other side of the highway. I turned up another road to go towards the dog park but they were resurfacing the road and I was not in the mood for gravel. I turned around, and continued on up Summit until I hit Waddington, then went in the opposite direction of my house and down in there a bit and yes, ended up back on Summit going uphill to Waddington again. I ran out of motivation to do 20K, mostly because it would be another few kms uphill but had a nice chat with a guy in a truck from a paving company who is paving the driveway next door to us. He was driving around I guess and saw me at different points here and there, commenting on the fact that I get around. I would probably get around more if I knew some good bike routes that did not lead into heavy traffic areas. So more exploring to do in the days ahead. It is a good way to learn where things are in a town. Just jump on a bike and you may surprise yourself.
